OVERVIEW

Vineyards in Bosnia & Herzegovina is located in the north and the south part of the country: the Bosnian wine region located in the Kozarac region (Prijedor being the main city), Ukrina region (with Derventa city in the North and Banja Luka city in the South) and Majevica region (around Tuzia city), and Herzegovina wine region, between the rivers Neretva and Trebišnjica, where the grapes suitable for wine production are mostly located: the regions of Mostar (in particular in the sub-region of Čitluk and Međugorje) and Jablanica a little more north of Mostar, are the heart of wine production and where almost all wineries are situated.

South dukagjini

Overview

South Dukagjini is the dominant wine region in Kosovo (around 95% of the total area under vineyards) and extends in the southwestern part of the country on the territory of municipalities Gjakova, Rahovac, Prizren and Suva Reka.

It comprises 5 sub-regions: Rahovec (the dominant vine region with around 2,456ha of vineyards), Suhareka (575ha), Prizren (198ha), Gjakova (77ha) and Malsiheeva (65ha).

Climate

With its unique climate and favorable conditions for vineyards, the Rahovec area in Kosovo is well-suited for wine production. The Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and cool winters, provides optimal conditions for grape cultivation, resulting in high-quality wines. The diversity of climates and microclimates in the region adds to the richness and complexity of the wines produced in Rahovec, making it a destination of choice for wine lovers and connoisseurs. 

Soil

The wine regions in Kosovo are characterized by diverse soil types, including Vertisol, Fluvisol, and Humus-Silicate soil. These unique soil compositions contribute to the distinctiveness and complexity of the wines produced in the region.

The vineyards in Kosovo are typically situated at altitudes ranging from 300 to 600 meters, with varying slopes that can range from moderately steep to gentle. This ideal combination of altitude and slope provides favorable conditions for grape cultivation, allowing for optimal grape development and resulting in high-quality wines with unique characteristics.

north dukagjini

Overview

North Dukagjini wine region is located in the northwestern part of Metohija, on the territory of municipalities of Istok, Peć and Klina. It consists of two sub-regions: Peć and Istok. This region contributes to 5% of the total area under vine.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and cool winters, provides optimal conditions for grape cultivation, resulting in high-quality wines. The diversity of climates and microclimates in the region adds to the richness and complexity of the wines produced in Kosovo.

Soil

The predominant soil type in this region is Fluvisol, and to a lesser extent Clay, Vertisol, Cambisol, Humus-Silicate soil, etc. are also present.         
The vineyards extend up to 500 meters above sea level, on moderately steep to gentle terrain.
